A girl who can see colors in people’s hearts joins a band with two other people. Naoko Yamada’s fifth feature film. I loved this movie. It had a certain warmth to it—the warmth that Totsuko brought through her honest appreciations, the warmth that lies in new friendships, the warmth of forgiveness and acceptance, the warmth of spending time with those you love away from the turmoil of life, and the warmth of creating art. I think of the prayer Totsuko recited: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Life is hard, and perhaps it is best that, like Totsuko’s free-spirited color-seeing, we too somehow find within ourselves the serenity, courage, and wisdom to get through it.
